EuroQuiz #2 - The Solution

The mystery bird for the month of August was identified as a wheatear (Oenanthe sp.) by all our entrants. However, we received a broad range of entries within the wheatear group. The bird was in fact, a juvenile Mourning Wheatear (Oenanthe lugens) and was photographed at Zihor Junction in the southern Negev. It was very young and still being fed its parent, as shown in the accompanying photograph.

We received a number of entries for Black-eared Wheatear (O. hispanica) 18%, Pied Wheatear (O. pleshanka) 23%, Red-tailed Wheatear (O. xanthopryma) 9%, Desert Wheatear (O. deserti) 7%, Finsch's Wheatear (O. finschii) 2% and Cyprus Wheatear (O. cypriaca) 2%, while the majority and correct answer was for Mourning Wheatear (O. lugens) with 39%.

Of the entrants that attempted to guess the location, Barak Granit of Israel was the closest. Barak identified the bird correctly and suggested the Hiyyon Plain as the location which is less than 10 kilometres south of Zihor Junction, so well done to him.

Europhoto 3 has been on our homepage for three weeks but we've received very few entries to date. Could our quiz be coming a little more challenging?

Good luck in stage 3,

James P. Smith & The Birdingisrael team
